At Morning Data we have long felt working from home should be an option for everyone, however whilst the team are working in the cloud and connected online it's still not a given that all work can be done from home.
Software Developers sometimes think they are lone wolves, focused on their screen and accompanying mug of coffee/can of red bull! However a surprising amount of chatter and exchange of ideas happen throughout the day. Team members of different ages and experiences exchange techniques and hints an essential process of skills exchange for them and protection for the employer!
We maintain everyone can work from home to support life, sick dependents, building works, an essential delivery or home appliance repair. But in general we are a cohesive and interactive team that work best when we are at close quarters. That said we have a whole variety of working hours arrangements with the team so each can design their hours to work best for them.
For years, we have been wrongly focused on time spent at work as a measure of productivity. The thing is, that measure of productivity simply makes no sense. For some reason, managers have a tendency to think others aren't working unless they can see them... but guess what? Just because your employee is sitting in their seat at their computer does not mean they are being productive.
